TIP coordinates workshop for FAO Global Internship, Volunteers and Fellows Programme to Empower Indigenous Peoples to Contribute towards Achieving No Poverty (SDG1) and Zero Hunger (SDG2) ) at the FAO headquarters in Rome, Iraq Room, on the 24th and 25th September 2018.
TIP organised a workshop for FAO Global Internship, Volunteers and Fellows Programme to Empower Indigenous Peoples to Contribute towards Achieving No Poverty (SDG1) and Zero Hunger (SDG2). Titled the INDIGENOUS IVF WORKSHOP 2018 the sessions were had participants from the Member States of FAO, Indigenous organisations, indigenous academicians, FAO former Interns and representatives of UN Agencies. The FAO contracted TIP and Bioversity International to facilitate the proceedings with the objectives of showcasing FAO’s IVF Programme for Indigenous Peoples, provide a forum for a multi-stakeholder dialogue to discuss strategic priorities and emerging challenges and to identify potential synergies and potential partnerships.
The expected outcomes over the 2 days were to generate concrete recommendations for enhance the relevance of the IVF Programme for Indigenous Peoples and concrete collaborative arrangements with relevant stakeholders. The main conclusions of the workshop especially highlighted by indigenous representatives and others were the following:
This IVF Programme for Indigenous Peoples is an important initiative of FAO which should be sustained with support from FAO and its funders and other parties.
To be meaningful to Indigenous Youths, the IVF Programme must have a very clear partnership with indigenous communities under the coordinating role of an Indigenous organisations. This must be one of the strategic partnership that FAO will need to first.
Indigenous representatives also stated that any relationship with an indigenous organisations and indigenous communities must be built on respect and a cultural framework.
The IVF Programme for Indigenous Peoples must evolve a learning process where Indigenous participants of the IVF Programme are encouraged to evolve a strong bonding between traditional knowledge and contemporary science as equal partners.
The IVF Programme for Indigenous Peoples must be a collaborative and creative programme not only with indigenous Peoples but also with the other Rome based Agencies and other partners
