TIP has been facilitating with its circle of experts as mentors studies and orientation program on Agroecology.
Initiated with its partner NESFAS in Shillong, Meghalaya where visiting Agroecologist from Mexico, Dr Francisco J Rozado May, conducted a workshop for Agroecological trainers at the NESFAS headquarters and related communities in Meghalaya in January 2016. In the session, Dr Francisco expounded on the concept of agroecology – a discipline that involves the study of the structure and function of an agricultural system keeping in mind the various aspects that influence it, which include ecology, availability of technology and socio-political systems.
Workshops such as this will aim to pave the way for Agroecological Schools. This will help conduct many such sessions to direct attention to traditional agricultural systems. Through agroecology and addressed modern moves will bring to the fore management approaches that are grounded in well proven traditional practices. They will highlight how agriculture systems can be transformed gradually to become more sustainable in four simple steps – reduction of use of external supplements to better crops, substituting these supplements with natural products, designing a better system and finally networking and creating spaces where there is “intercultural” exchange of knowledge.
He went on to explain “intercultural interaction” which involves sharing of traditional knowledge that would bring communities together in the creation of their own solutions to produce healthy food and conserve soil and water. It would possibly create a relationship between urban professionals, governing bodies and the farmers to enable the communities to take ownership of the food supply.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
